Background
We first found out about the great new product a few months ago while searching the internet for
professional strength greens mowers suitable for backyard greens that were under the price tag of
golf course models that run in the $5,000 to $15,000 dollar range. An anonymous person e-mailed me about
a fantastic new mower on the market that would give the amateur greenskeeper a golf course quality cut
at an affordable price ... and best of all (unlike pro units) was easy to maintain. After a little digging
and searching ... I found Hudson Star, an Indiana company that had engineered a new mower for this purpose.
After a few weeks of phone calls, I was priveledged to a personal demonstration of the mower (on my green) by
Charles Hudson, it's inventor and principal engineer. I thought I had everything about cutting greens figured out
with my mish mash of gear, but I was thoroughly impressed with his ideas, design and the rock solid product that
I was cutting my precious green with.
The Product
The mower is a low profile steel looking push mower with a razor sharp bright red reel with 11 blades, resembling a
snowblower more than a lawnmower. It has an sweeping elongated aluminum handle and a black frame. The center contains
a heavy, multi-spin rubber roller. This split design grips the turf but allows you to turn on a dime as one side spins
and the other keeps in contact with the putting green surface. There is another steel roller at the front of the reel
and bedknife assembly just as you would find on any professional unit. The internal drive assembly is sealed and self-lubricating.
I was impressed at how rapidly this heavy reel was spinning when I pushed, This prevents "waffling" or a jagged cut caused
by a slower rotating reel, which is common in other push mowers. The only moving part is a sturdy adjustment knob which
"unbelievably" adjusts "both sides" of the reel to different heights and provides for infinite height from 1/8" to 3/16".
The unit is finished off with an aluminum catch bin (I was told that this might be replaced in the future with a plastic one).
All in all, the unit had a high-quality feel to it, and was very sturdy. You may be passing this one on to grandchildren.
Other Features
Other notable points: The unit was easy heavy enough to sit down when cutting and rolling, but light enough to maneuver. There
is an ingenious feature that lets you flip the handle backwards to roll/transport the unit from a distance to the green. Another
nice feature is the wide 16" cut which speeds cutting.
The Series II has several improvements over the Series One Hudson Star. The handle has been changed for shipping and fold-away storage,
the drive/clutch bearings have been improved with new materials, the height adjuster now can cut greens and collars (needed an adapter on Series I)
and the new clippings pail has been redesigned to better catch clippings.

To sum it all up, I was very impressed with the unit and told Mr. Hudson that I wanted to become a distributor.
(I secretly want one for myself). The cut it gave my green was tight and true with no scalping or waffling. It
requires very little exertion to get the cylinder spinning and the mower moving forward. This make cutting a breeze
for any green of reasonable size (probably all the way up to 10,000 sf). Power just isn't necessary for most backyard
greens (avg size is 1000 sf) and your neighbors will love the peace and quiet. If you are serious about building a green
that will look great and play fast, then the Hudson Star is for you.
